Taking Your First Spring Ride

Early Spring Riding

This time of year presents issues that may not be encountered as riding season moves into May and June. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you head out on those early spring rides.

1. Unaware drivers. It's been months since motorists have seen motorcycles on the road. Some may have forgotten about sharing the road with bikes until they start seeing them with greater frequency. We always need to be on high alert for motorists straying into our lane, and pulling out or turning in front of us. Early spring is the time for us to remember to always ride defensively, and assume we are invisible.

2. Unpredictable road conditions. For those anxious to get out there as soon as possible, keep in mind that debris from winter road crews may still be on the road. Potholes will be most prevalent during early spring. Corners and intersections are the places most likely to have bad traction. Always ride as though there will be loose material on the roadways, especially corners and intersections.

3. Riding gear. Even if it's nice out, unaware early season drivers and bad road conditions make full gear a wise choice. It's a good idea to stash colder weather gear on the bike even when temperatures are warm at the start of a ride. As the sun sets, the ride may get unexpectedly cold, and of course, weather conditions in Iowa are known to change rapidly.
