Tier II Interventions in Education
Tier II interventions are defined as targeted, short-term approaches aimed at small groups of students, involving collaboration between teachers and various intervention specialists, such as school psychologists, special education teachers, principals, behavior specialists, school counselors, social workers, or other professionals with expertise tailored to the student’s needs. The following are key components of Tier II interventions:
-
Short-term
-
Targeted and specifically tailored to the student's requirements
-
Implemented with fidelity
-
Conducted in small groups
-
Supplementary to the core program ("in addition to" rather than "instead of")
-
Based on research or empirical evidence
-
Culturally responsive
-
Attentive to linguistic diversity, addressing the needs of English Language Learners (ELL) and different forms of English.
Examples of Tier II targeted interventions include, but are not limited to, small group behavior contracts, check-in/check-out systems, counseling or guidance groups, conflict resolution groups, parent conferences, and mentoring.
