Tier III Interventions in Education
For students who are not making adequate progress with universal and supplemental or targeted interventions at Tiers I and II, it is advisable to consider increasing the intensity or characteristics of interventions at Tier III. This may involve implementing different, more specialized interventions. The distinction between targeted and intensive interventions lies in the heightened intensity and individualization of the latter. Tier III interventions should be:
-
Short-term
-
Supplemental to core programs and targeted interventions (which may involve strategies from all three tiers)
-
Based on research and/or evidence
-
Individualized
-
Highly explicit, systematically addressing specific needs
-
Implemented with fidelity
-
Supported by personnel with a high level of expertise (as appropriate)
-
Designed around function-based support plans
-
Culturally responsive
-
Sensitive to linguistic diversity
Intensive or Tier III interventions may encompass various strategies, including but not limited to increasing the intensity and frequency of Tier II interventions, conducting assessments to identify the function of challenging behaviors, implementing behavior support plans, issuing weekly progress reports, and conducting more frequent parent conferences.
