Timeshare Woes Continue to Expand

Each and every day, our law firm assists dissatisfied and often resentful clients hoping to cancel their timeshare contracts. The litany of complaints rarely changes and often centers around unaffordable, rising maintenance fees and fraudulent promises from timeshare companies. One would hope for timeshare industry change in the face of so many annoyed owners, but promised profits seems to spur more expansion.

A Win for Shareholders, A Loss for Timeshare Owners

A major piece of financial news over the last week involved the Marriott Vacations’ agreement to buy Interval Leisure Group (ILG) for about $4.7 billion (give or take a dollar?), thus creating what is deemed the largest luxury timeshare vacation resort brand. It seems a sweet deal for shareholders, as the combined revenue is expected to be $2.9 billion with ownership of more than 100 vacation properties worldwide. Even sweeter, firm will enjoy exclusive access to Hyatt Hotels and Marriott International loyalty programs for vacation ownership. Learn more about timeshare cancellation!

As the sound bites go, the enhanced product portfolio and scale will benefit members and owners, while enhancing value for shareholders. It is worth noting that the luxury vacation brands for which the company will be global licensee include the Hyatt, Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Sheraton, St. Regis and Westin and will have a significant impact on timeshare vacation owners.

Does Bigger Mean Better?

Perhaps that’s true for shareholders, in that the scale of ownership alone could produce more than $75 million in ‘cost synergy’ annual savings. One can easily doubt a positive outcome for timeshare owners, by reviewing a few of the hundreds of complaints online and elsewhere about Marriott timeshare operations.

Better Business Bureau Reviews

A brief glance through Orlando’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) reviews reveals lengthy complaints about Marriott Vacation Club. One owner likened ownership to a full-time job with multiple, thwarted efforts to straighten out a considerable number of lost points. Rudeness on the part of the representative did not manage to assuage the owner’s indignation. Learn more about how to get rid of your timeshare!

Another also complained of customer service, despite their lengthy Lifetime Platinum Elite Marriott Rewards member status. This owner gave a nod to generally positive vacation experiences, but found service inadequate, information conflicting, booking procedures unwieldy and rising maintenance fees excessive. He also suggested that the negative impact of the Vacation Club is tarnishing Marriott’s otherwise positive reputation.

Take the time to look for yourself, as there are many more complaints on BBB and other internet sites. You do have to wonder why strong hospitality brands enter a timeshare industry that still needs plenty of improvements in consumer satisfaction – until you circle back to profits and shareholder value.
