A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a structured, written strategy designed to teach and reinforce positive behavior and prevent misbehavior in students. A BIP can be implemented for students with or without a 504 or IEP, and they are put in place only when the misbehavior seriously interferes with the student’s education. BIPs are structured according to three parts: describing the problematic behavior, explaining why it is occurring, and implementing strategies to resolve it. Schools will assemble a team to investigate the misbehavior by interviewing students, their families, teachers, and other school staff. The team may also observe students, conduct assessments, and review past reports to properly develop the BIP. BIPs are reviewed periodically to ensure that they are up-to-date and working effectively.
