Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is a key component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and it ensures that special education students receive instruction in the same classroom as general education students to the maximum extent possible and appropriate. This means that if a student has certain needs that cannot be met through regular classroom instruction, they may need to be placed in a different environment in order to receive an appropriate education. Some common LRE placements include:
