What Are IEEs in Special Education?
An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an assessment that is conducted by an examiner who is not a staff member of the school district. If a parent disagrees with a special education evaluation performed by the school district, they can request an IEE for their child. The cost of the IEE is paid for by the school district or is otherwise covered at public expense, meaning it is of no cost to the child’s family. If you ask for an IEE at public expense, the school district must give you details on where to obtain an IEE and the criteria the district uses for independent educational evaluations. The following are important things to note when requesting an IEE:
-
After requesting an IEE at public expense, the school district must either provide it or request a due process hearing to uphold its evaluation or invalidate the independent evaluation
-
If, after a hearing, it is determined that the school district’s evaluation is appropriate, then the school district does not have to pay for the IEE and the cost falls on you
-
The school district can cover the cost of one IEE each time they conduct an evaluation that you disagree with
