State academic content standards outline the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Under the requirements of NCLB, these standards must be both comprehensive and demanding, promoting the development of advanced competencies. Each state is responsible for establishing clear and consistent standards across various subjects and grade levels:
-
Reading standards cover Grades 3 through 8, and 10 through 12.
-
Math standards encompass Grades 3 through 8, and 10 through 12.
-
Science standards are defined for elementary, middle school, and high school levels.
States have the autonomy to define their own content standards, which apply universally, including for students with disabilities. It is essential that all students have equitable access to and are evaluated based on these standards corresponding to their grade level. In the context of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) structured around standards, members of the IEP team must possess a thorough grasp of and incorporate state content standards to ensure alignment with IEP objectives.
