What are the 14 Major Types of Disability?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) recognizes 14 disability categories that qualify a student for special education and related services:
-
Autism
-
Deaf-Blindness
-
Developmental Delay (3 to 5 year-olds)
-
Deafness
-
Emotional Disturbance
-
Hearing Impairment
-
Intellectual Disability
-
Multiple Disabilities
-
Orthopedic Impairment
-
Other Health Impairment (OHI)
-
Specific Learning Disabilities
-
Speech or Language Impairment
-
Traumatic Brain Injury
-
Visual Impairment
If an evaluation is conducted and it is determined that a child has one of the disabilities listed above, but only requires a related service and not special education, then they are not considered a child with a disability under this section of the IDEA. However, if the related service needed by the child is considered special education under State standards, they would be classified as a child with a disability under this section.
