One of the biggest challenges with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) is the misconception that having an IEP means a student is less capable or requires easier work. In reality, an IEP ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to education by tailoring supports and accommodations to their specific needs. It is not about making the curriculum easier, but making it accessible and meaningful for each student. These misconceptions can lead to stigma and unfair assumptions about students with IEPs, which can affect their self-esteem and opportunities for growth.

While the primary goal of an IEP is to provide necessary accommodations to support students with disabilities, there can be unintended consequences. One major drawback is the potential for lowered expectations or reduced challenges for students with IEPs. Accommodations are designed to ensure equal access to education, aiming to level the playing field for students with disabilities. However, there is a risk that educators, either intentionally or unintentionally, might set lower academic or behavioral expectations for these students. This can result in a situation where the student is not sufficiently challenged or stimulated to reach their full potential.
