The Rehabilitation Act prevents discrimination against individuals with disabilities in federally
funded programs or activities, including public schools or publicly funded private schools. This
ensures that students with disabilities have access to an education that is free and tailored to
their needs. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act mandates that school districts offer a Free
Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to eligible students who experience a physical or mental
condition that significantly limits one or more major life activities, such as learning. The 504 plan
is designed around the specific needs and strengths of each student and includes
accommodations such as additional time to complete tests and assignments, modified class
schedules, oral testing, and access to occupational or physical therapy.
