What is a Functional Behavioral Assessment?

A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is focused on identifying and understanding the behaviors that interfere with a student’s learning. It aims to explain why a student is behaving a certain way and considers the student’s nature as well as the nature of their surrounding environment. An FBA is conducted by collecting data regarding the cause of the target behavior, and coming up with strategies to help improve that behavior. Once an FBA has been completed, its findings are used to develop a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that will help eliminate unwanted behaviors and facilitate learning.
