An exclusionary time out is a temporary and monitored separation of a student from a school activity in an open setting, in other words, they are not prohibited from leaving the space. The purpose of an exclusionary time out is to calm a student down and de-escalate their misbehavior. The following are characteristics of an exclusionary time out:
-
It is the most restrictive level of time out
-
The student cannot watch the activities
-
The student is constantly supervised by a qualified staff member
-
De-escalation procedures or restitution may take place
An exclusionary time out is not an intervention that should be overused, and it should not be used inappropriately. If it is found that exclusionary time outs are not effective in addressing the student’s misbehavior, other intervention methods should be developed. The use of a time out should be documented, including its nature, location, and the procedures used.
