What is an IEP for Autism?
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), every child is entitled to receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), including those with disabilities. Children diagnosed with autism and certain other disabilities are required by this legislation to have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) tailored specifically for them. Each IEP is uniquely crafted to address the individual special education needs of the child, outlining goals, objectives, and detailing the specific services they will receive as part of their educational plan. Prior to developing an IEP for a child with autism, a procedure must be followed to establish their eligibility for special education. This process begins with an evaluation to assess if the child has a disability, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). If the evaluation indicates that special education or related services are necessary, the next step is to create an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This plan will be customized to address the specific needs and strengths of the child.
