What is Assistive Technology in Special Education?
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to any item, system, or piece of equipment that is used by students with disabilities to enhance, maintain, or improve their functional abilities. AT ranges in complexity, with different levels of technology being employed for different AT options. AT is a factor that must be considered by Planning and Placement Teams (PPTs) when developing a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Any AT that is included in a student’s IEP is considered an element of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), and therefore should not be paid for by the student’s family.
