What is Child Find in Special Education?

Child Find is a provision of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires states to identify, locate, and evaluate students who may be in need of special education and related services. States must develop and implement a system that determines which children are in need of special education and related services but are not yet receiving it. This requirement applies to children from birth to the age of 21 in both private and public institutions. Child Find helps ensure that every child has access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), and it holds schools and districts accountable in providing support to special education students.
