What is Emergency Restraint and Seclusion?
Emergency restraint and emergency seclusion must only be used in emergency situations where a student is a serious risk to themselves or others. In order for a member of school staff to place a student in emergency restraint or seclusion, they must have training in how to properly conduct restraint or seclusion. These are emergency responses rather than planned interventions, and should not be included in a special education student’s IEP. Emergency situations that constitute emergency restraint and seclusion include aggressive behavior towards other students and members of school staff, and behavior that is harmful towards oneself.
