Millions of Americans are injured in preventable accidents each year. While all injuries are tragic, many victims are fortunate in that their injuries are treatable and will eventually heal without any long-term complications or disabilities. For some personal injury victims, however, their lives will never be the same. Spinal cord injuries, or SCIs, affect tens of thousands Americans each year, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that approximately 200,000 people are currently living with SCI.1 These injuries are extremely serious, and in some cases leave victims with complications that modern medicine is currently unable to treat. In these cases, it is extremely important that victims discuss their options with an experienced Philadelphia personal injury lawyer. Victims of spinal cord injuries are often eligible for significant financial compensation, which can help ensure their and their families financial security.

What is SCI?

Spinal cord injuries are injuries to the spinal cord or spinal column in such a way as to damage the bundle of nerves that make up the spinal cord.2 These nerves are responsible for allowing the brain to communicate with the rest of the body, so any damage to the spinal cord has the potential to result in neurological problems.

What kinds of accidents cause SCI?

Spinal cord injuries can stem from traumatic blow to the back or directly to the spine that causes damage to the vertebrae.  In addition, additional damage to the spinal cord can occur due to the swelling, bleeding, inflammation, and accumulation of fluids in the spinal cord due to the body’s natural response to trauma. SCI can be caused by a wide variety of accidents, but some of the most common include the following:

Anyone who suspects that they have sustained a spinal cord injury should seek medical attention as soon as possible. In many cases, early intervention can result in a much better outcome than if there is a delay in treatment. Once the injury is stabilized, victims should be sure to contact an experienced Philadelphia personal injury lawyer to discuss their options.
