Where Can Seclusion Occur?
Seclusion is not a place, rather it is an act of confining a student to a location that they are prevented from leaving. An area may be designated for seclusion, however, seclusion can take place in a hallway, classroom, or other location that the student cannot leave. The following are criteria that a room used for seclusion must meet:
-
Be big enough for the student’s age, size, and behavior
-
Have a ceiling height that aligns with the other rooms in the building
-
Have heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting that align with the other rooms in the building
-
Be free of dangerous objects that can be used by the student
-
Meet building code requirements
-
If it has a locking system, it must be easily unlocked and meet the fire safety code
-
The door must have an unbreakable window for monitoring purposes
-
Have a window so the student can see beyond the seclusion area
