When it comes to special education, each student’s case is different making each of their needs different. While a 504 plan can be very beneficial for students who require certain accommodations due to a disability, the services it provides may be limited compared to an IEP. With an IEP comes access to special education and related services, and a more hands-on approach from specialized staff. Students with an IEP who qualify for special education and related services under the IDEA receive support for a longer period of time, from age 3 to 21. Schools are held more accountable in providing individual support and accommodations to students with an IEP compared to those with a 504 plan. There is also more parental involvement in the development of an IEP, and while parents have rights under both plans, the rights of parents and students are more safeguarded with an IEP.
