Which Settings Can be Used in an IAES?
Although the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act does not outline the specific alternative setting for providing educational services in an IAES, the chosen IAES must allow the child to continue engaging with the general education curriculum, albeit in a different environment, while also making progress toward the goals established in the child's IEP. The decision regarding the IAES will be based on the unique circumstances of each child's situation. For instance, an IAES could take place in a different area of the child's current school, in another school within the LEA, or in a completely different location. Factors to consider when deciding on an IAES placement may include the particular programs and services offered in the alternative setting, such as additional counseling, behavioral and academic supports, and other services or programs designed to address the behavior that necessitated the child's placement in an IAES.
