In the case Guo v. Goldberg, a 32 year old woman sued dog owners for injuries received as a result of being bitten by their dog. The action is brought under Connecticut General Statute § 22-357, otherwise known as the Connecticut dog-bite statute. The law holds the owner or keeper of a dog responsible any damage or injury caused by their dog. In the event such injury occurs, owners are liable for the amount of the damage sustained. Damages may come in two forms, economic and noneconomic. Economic damages cover medical bills, costs of necessary treatments, and even lost income. Noneconomic damages refer to intangible losses that result from the injury. Common examples of noneconomic damages are pain and suffering, fear, anxiety and loss of future enjoyment.

The woman sustained a severe and painful laceration on the back of her left leg, and continues to suffer from anxiety, fear of dogs and emotional distress. Despite plastic surgery treatment for the scar, she still has a permanent two-inch scar on her leg. She incurred ambulance, hospital, medical, drug and transportation expenses in connection to her medical treatment, which totaled $6,336.93. She was unable to work for two weeks and lost $150.00. After due hearing, the court awarded the woman economic damages of $6,486.93 and non-economic damages of $15,000.
